Ponza

This is a small Italian island a little ways off the coast near Gaeta.  On a very clear day you can see it from Gaeta and it was one of those places we always said we wanted to visit so we finally did.  It was a quiet, relaxing place.  I think most of the tourists here were Italians which gives the island a different flavor than those places where the tourists are more international.  We arrived in the early evening due to our slow crossing so all we did that evening is go out to dinner.  The next day we took a small boat up the coast to a popular beach and then rented a moped.  Two hours was enough time to ride to the other end of the island, eat lunch and return.

Yes, the beach is gravel-we Americans have it really lucky when it comes to beaches.
