On Sunday we journeyed down to Monte di
Procida on the outskirts of Napoli (Naples) to have lunch with my former Italian
landlord, Gennarro, and his extended family. In addition to our visit, it
was Gennarro's father-in-law's birthday celebration. As a result of this,
lunch was a rather protracted affair, by American standards that is. We
sat down (at least the men and the guests did) at 1:30. The first course,
raw mussels (cozze crudo) arrived at 2. The courses that followed were: a
yellow melon (maybe Cassava?) and Proscuitto, Pasta, eggplant (cooked two different ways), rabbit,
potatoes and peas, watermelon and plums, cake, ice cream, digestivo,
and coffee. We finished at 5. Stuffed. Here is the birthday boy
with his cake.
This was the men's end of the table
and this, the women's end.

The women, plus young Maria's boyfriend.

Not part of the lunch, but someone we visited with
earlier, was Gennarro's mother, shown here.
