Friday we headed north, again on the Via
Aurelia up to Pisa where we stopped to check on the leaning tower. Here we
are.
In this picture you can see the large bands they have attached to the tower to
reduce the amount of lean.
Been there, seen that. On the road again. We got on the A12 and ran
up to Genova (Genoa) just so we could have all the fun of going through 48
tunnels-give or take a couple. From there it was up to Milan and on to
Como where we managed to get lost for the first time. Our map showed a
road going from Como to Bellagio and we did see some signs for Bellagio,
although not as many as we saw for Lecco, another town on the lake.
Somewhere in the middle of Como the Bellagio signs petered out. After
going around a traffic circle 3 times we decided to take one of the many roads
to Lecco. Then we found a gas station and asked directions. The
answer was simple. Go to Lecco and then to Bellagio. We started off
that way and then found a small road that we could follow across the
mountains. We chose that way and had a very pretty trip.
La Pergola, the inn we stayed in, was built as a convent in the 15th century and then in 1732 passed into the hands of the family that still owns it. We had a great room with the balcony going to the water's edge.
This is a part of the view from our
balcony.
and this is the view from their private pier. Our balcony and door are on
the right.
