Italy
On Saturday while driving down to Paestum we met a milk truck driver who thought he could pass us and a very large and much too slow, tour bus. Unfortunately for our little Mercedes, the truck driver was wrong. There wasn't enough room to pass. Here he is explaining how it wasn't his fault. If only the tour bus wasn't so slow...
Other than a broken mirror and some rumpled sheet metal, we were fine and were able to continue on.
This is the town of Amalfi, for which the drive is named.
We went to Paestum to see the ruins of the Greek temples which date back to about 600BC. When we last visited Paestum several of the temples were surrounded with scaffolding so we were very happy to see that this year the scaffolding was down and the temples could be enjoyed again. But, they now have barricades around them so you can no longer stroll through them.
And here is Teresa in one of the ruins
After Paestum we went back up the coast, stopping in Vietri sul Mare for some pottery shopping and dinner.
On Sunday we went to the Naples airport to swap cars and then on to Cuma, another very old Greek settlement. The cave of the Sybils, one of the key attractions at Cuma.
To round out the day, we had lunch with my old landlord and his family.
On Alison's left is Luigi, the father-in-law, followed by Memo the brother-in-law, and Gennaro, the former landlord.
Here we have three Maria's. From the left are Gennaro's wife, Memo's fiancé, and Gennaro's daughter.
After lunch, Alison and Teresa toured the garden with Luigi
As usual, the lunch was large enough to count as dinner too so we returned to La Fenice to rest and wait for the midnight fireworks show which was to celebrate Positano's Saints day (St. Peter if memory serves correctly).
